Yes, there are two items of news today about Mexico and our border with Mexico--three, if you count the somewhat old news that we are giving Mexico 440 million or so of taxlpayer money to fight the drug cartels which are now pretty much controlling the country).
Together, the two items tell you why we would have t invent El Paso politicians, if they did not already exist, if only for comic relief (Democrats all--pretty much including the few Republicans who may have an office here and there). These two items also show you why El Paso, aside from a lousy voting record, has so little influence in the rest of Texas (except when able to use "political correctness" blackmail to extort money). El Paso is almost 600 miles (550 or so to San Antonio) from the main population centers of the state, and El Paso politicians are further tan that from the sentiments of most Texans (even though Democrats are strong in several parts of Texas, and almost won the Texas House (if they did not--I am not sure I even saw the final results).
One item of "big news" today in El Paso was an open appeal/letter from every prominent Democrat politician in El Paso (from Congressman to state senator to county attorney) to Barack "World" Obama. El Paso is asking Obama to stop constuction of the border fence (disobey the law, in other words, but then El Paso Democrats have no problem with illegal immigrants violating the law either). This is why the Bush Administration has (belatedly) tried to finish as much of the border fence as possible, before January 20. You can expect that Obama will probably cater to the leftist Hispanics (not nearly all Hispanics) view of what will appeal to Latinos when he gets in office, unless Obama's seemingly natural inclination not to rock the boat disappoints these leftists again.
Local Democrats call the border fence a "Wall of Hate" (could not make this up).
Unfortunately for the credibility of local Democrat politicians (who had none anyway), there was that second item of news today--they type of news that appears every day in El Paso, although it is usually ignored by the mainstream media. The second highest prosecutor in Juarez, Mexico got shot to death yesterday or today, along with his driver. As usual, the continuing violence by the drug cartels is blamed, as they war with each other and with the people trying to control them. You never know which is the cause of any individual assassination, because corruption is so endemic in Mexico that any individual Mexican official may be connected with one drug cartel or another.
"At least" (that despicable AP term for "death tolls" more than applicable here) 1100 people have been killed by drug cartel related violence in Juarez alone, since the beginning of the year. The toll may be above 1200 by now (and is probably considerably higher, in reality).
Now you would think that El Paso politicians would worry more about what to do about stopping the expansion of drug cartel influence and violence into the United States, than they would worry about their "open border" agenda (which I assure you they have). If so, you do not know El Paso politicians--especially the Democratic ones with the most influence. They are as leftist as it gets, especially on leftist "Latino" causes--where, again, all Latinos are not leftists, but Republicans are giving Hispanic U.S. citizens who are not leftist few reasons to vote Republican.
Still, you have to admit today's juxtaposition of political leftist agenda with reality on the ground is especially ironic and revealing.
Now the border fence will not be nearly as effective in controlling the border as would be effective domestic discouragement of illegal immigrants (enforcement of the law), removing the incentive for illegal immigrants to come here illegally. However, this drug cartel problem, along with international terrorism, has mad things like the border fence essential, even if not sufficient to really stop illegal immigration. It is only a matter of time until violence spreads across the border, unless we have effective control of the border. It is amazing that El Paso has remained pretty much immune to the escalating problems in Juarez.
If Obama, in effect, declares "open border" time, El Paso politicians will learn the truth of that old cliche': "Watch what you ask for. You may get it."
