Mike Huckabee, Vice President

One of today's stories is that Mike Huckabee has come right out and asked John McCain to pick him to be the Vice Presidential nominee.

Not a chance.   I first became familiar with Mike Huckabee when he was an Arkansas politician (he was governor for 10 years), and a semi-regular on the Don Imus' radio program (as was McCain).   Huckabee was an ambitious, publicity hound then, and he is one now.  There is quite a bit to like about Huckabee, but there is also quite a bit to dislike.

No, I don't think Huckabee's "joke" about Barack Obama disqualifies him (see yesterday's entry), but I do think it illustrates how Huckabee's act can wear thin.  I don't see McCain choosing him.  You don't get the VP slot by actively campaigning for it (publicly).

I watched Meet the Press when Russert hounded Huckabee over and over and they had just been talking about the people wanting honesty from their politicians and Russert said "if McCain came to you and said I really need you on the ticket to help win, would you accept?"  What did you want him to say?  Give me a break. Huckabee has said all along he wants McCain to pick who best can help him win and he supports Senator McCain no matter who he chooses.  McCain would have to be a total idiot not to pick Huckabee.  As Curt Smith (former speechwriter for George HW Bush) stated "if we could  invent the perfect running mate for John McCain that man would be Huckabee.  Luckily he already exists.  All McCain has to do is pick him".  McCain and Huckabee complete each other.  Where one is weak the other is strong.  Where one would struggle for votes, the other can get them there.  Plus, have you seen them together?  Body language experts gave the 97.7 almost perfect. Said that is extremely rare.  They put off tremendous chemistry when together.  This pairing excites the party like no other.  With McCain/Huckabee we believe that "YES WE CAN"
