A "big" "news" itm right now on AOL is Drew Peterson surrendering himself on a WEAPON'S CHARGE (not a murcer charge, or crime of violence). This, of course, in NOT a significant story as to any normal person. It is a "story" only because of the former, unmerciful media hype about the disappearance of Stacy Peterson and the "suspicious" death of Peterson wife no. 3. See the archives of this blog, including the "Drew Peterson, Redux" entry in the last week) for a CORRECT analysis of the FACTS of this story, and a correct analysis of how media coverage was indefensible.
What is the real purpose of today's story? Right. It is just to again bring up the disappearnace of wife no. 4 (Stacy), and to label Peterons a "suspect" in that disappearance (even though there is NO such "category" in American jurisprudence). . To quote Agatha Christie (Hercule Poiot, I think), or is it Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers): "I suspect everyone; I suspect no one."
Do you realize that "considered a suspect" is NOT an "official" designation in American law? Even people actually CHARGED are "presumed innoncent". Unless a person is being SOGHT for arrest or questioning, the media has no business "labeling" someone a "supsect" (as distinguished from setting out actual facts) The authorities have no business so labeling people either. There is NO DIFFERENCE between a person who is a "suspect", and one who is not, except for more scrutiny from the policee (which ALWAYS occurs when a wife/girlfriend disappears uncer suspicious circumstances with no obvious perp other than the husband/boyfriend--wheter there is a--meaningless--"label" of "suspect" or not).
This MEDIA thing of asking authorities to designate "suspects" is EVIL stuff--a reason everyone should hold today's media in total contempt. Whatever happened, by the way, to the supposedly imminent arrest (months ago) for killing the T:HIRD WIFE. Is it possible that there are NO FACTS there either justifying an actual ARREST? Unless Stacy is found, or PROOF found of EXACTLY what happened to her, there is NO CHANCE of convictin Peterson for his fourth wife's disappearnace (however much he may be "suspected").
Let me be clear here. Peterson is a megalomaniac with few redeeming personality traits (hard to feel sorry for). However, this blog has been consistently RIGHT, and the media (as usual) consistently WRONG in analyzing the actual FACTS. In this country you cannot convict someone on SPECULATION (good thing), but that is exactlly what the media tries to do every single day.
Yes, this should remind you of Al Capone (convicted of income tax evasion rather than murder). This weapon's charge has all of the earmarks of a charge made because of lack of FACTS to make any other charge stick (at least as of now).
