Mexico: A Failed Country

The news in El Paso (predictably NOT featured nationally, unlike less important news) continues to confirm this blog's continued statement of fact--not opinion:  Mexico is a FAILED country.

Rlecent news has included the following:

1.  Friday, it was reported in El Paso that a POLICE CHIEF in a Mexican town across the border from--I think--Columbus, New mexico (town that Pancho Villa once raided) has sought ASYLUM in the United States because of out of control drug vioilence in his town.

2.  The murder rate in Jurez (across the border from where I live in El Paso), has continued to be astounding (I reported earlier that there were 24 murders in the first 14 days of January, and the rate has hardly slowed down).  This has caused even students/young people to be leery of going into Juarez (as my daughters did, on occasion, when they were in high school here--not something I approved much).

3.  Drug wars and gangs really are out of control along the Mexican border.  A recent, continuing story in El Paso over the past few weeks has been the bodies buried in the back yard of a "drug gang/cartel house" in Juarez, where MULTIPLE victims of a drug gang were buried.

4.  There is the ongoing story of the HUNDREDS of (Mexican) women buried in a "dumping ground" for bodies in Jurarez--without most of the murders being solved.

There are basically daily stories of drug violence in Juarez, and along the Mexican border.

Further, I had my radio on this morning as background while I tried to pick up my house for the maid (to keep her from putting things where I can't find them).   I happened to listen to the radio program that Eliezer Ben-Joseph has on Saturday mornings.  Ben-Joseph, who actually was a client of mine for ahile, is a "natural healer" with a business called "Natural Solutions" here in El Paso (with his wife).  He is really a good guy, but pretty close to the kook fringe in his claims for various questionable types of "natural healing", which tend to confuse the real merits in a lot of his approach.  You can get a feel of how cloe he is to the kook fringe when you realize that his main guest today was a "tax freedom" guy--you know, one of those radio people who say that you can get away with not filing tax returns and thumbing your nose at the IRS in the name of freedom (I have a lot of sympathy with this--especially if a civil disobedience moement were to grow to the point that it forced the "Fair Tax", or some other reform of the tax system which gets essentially rid of the IRS, but it still puts you right on the kook fringe).  This is merely background, and NOT the point of this mention of Ben-Joseph.

The point here is that Ben-Joseph brought up his continuing support of a charity that feeds children in Jurez who "survie" by picking over garbage dumps in Juarez.  In other words, Ben-Joseph is (accurately) saying that Mexico does NOT take care of its poor the way we do in this country.  Children are left to fend for themselves, or starve.   Ben-Joseph also directly stated this morning what every person in El Paso knows:  Mexico is a CORRUPT country--getting MORE corrupt recently.

Contrary to what Alan Colmes tried to say (see entry on Alan Colmes and immigration--open borders), the U.S. govenment does NOT try to prevent people from going into Mexico (including illegal immigrants--assuming we had the will to make it difficult enough for them here).   Further, MEXICAN authorities are not generally interested in regulating traffic into Mexico from the United States, unless they have an ulterior motive.

Ben-Joseph noted the return of "mordida" (demand for bribes by Mexican city/state/federal employees to get them to do their job, or--more often--to prevent them from taking corrupt action against you).   Specifically, in connection with this CHARITY to provide food to Juarez children, Ben-Joseph said that Mexican border authroities have taken to stopping the food trucks and demanding "mordida" to avoid confiscation of the trucks.

You have heard people like Alan Colmes and Michael Moore say that we should have an "open border" with Mexico--a border at least as open as our border with Canada.  Leftists of this stripe tend to argue that the reason people worry about Mexico more than Canada is RACISM.

The aobve should illustrate to you how OBJECTIVELY STUPID this argument is.  Is Canada so much in control of drug cartels that police chiefs seek sanctuary in the U.S.?  Are there wholesale drug wars going on, where the drug gangs often intimidate/control the POLICE?  Are hundreds of women being killed an buried, with little effective action?  Are there massive number of children starving, and searching dumps to survive, and is there a massive problem with incredible poverty that the government is making no real attempt to solve (other than to encourage the poor to come here)?

It is BECAUSE Mexic is a FAILED country, and getting worse, that so many people there want to come here.  That is why we MUST get control of the border with Mexico, AND control illegal immigration from Mexico.  WE cannot solve Mexico's problems.  We cannot AFFORD an "open border" policy with Mexico.  It is objectively stupid to suggest otherwise, as all too many leftists do.

This has nothing to do with racism.  It has to do with Mexico solving its own problems, and us preventing Mexico from making its failed society OUR PROBLEM--not to mention its drug cartels and criminals.  Mexico has lost control of both its poverty and drug violence.  If we don't want to face having to control MEXICO'S poverty and drug violence spilling over into this country, we have to GAIN control of our border with Mexico.

The news in El Paso illustrates this every day.  There is almost a national blackout of the news on a national level, as the mainstream media actually favors the "open borders"/racism view of the Mexican border--despitve the obvious facts.

I have lived in this area (El Paso/New Mexico) for more than FROTY YEARS.  My daughters are 50% Mesican-American (my ex-wife was Mexican-American).   Mexico--at least along the border--is WOPRSE now than I have ever seen it.

As the news reflects (but news not going beyond the border), Mexico, along the border, is totally out of control, and getting worse.

One of my children's Godfathers, while a citizen, is Mexican by heritage and often visits his family south of the border. While he loves the vacation areas, he's told me of his businessmen relatives who (in one case) built their business alongside a police station just to keep the criminals at bay; after of course, they paid off the cops too.

Lot of work to be done down there, that's for sure.

The comment is well taken.  As I say, the problem is that Mexico wants US to solve ITS problems (or at least provide a safety valve to keep them from exploding), which we cannot AFFORD to do.   A secure border with Mexico, AND a discouragement of illegal immigration fromt he south, is absolutely essential.   The sad thing is that John McCain should be fully aware of the problem.  He is, after all, from ARIZONA.  However, McCain long ago became the most inside of Washington "insiders".  Romney little knew how right he was to suggest that McCain,, as a Washinton insider, could not be an agent for real "change".

The even SADDER thing is that Democrats (leftist, political kind) are WORSE.
